Dear Reader:
In the military, there is a group
of soldiers whose duty is to plan, down to the smallest
detail, everything necessary to ensure that a visit by or
to a foreign dignitary goes off without a hitch. These protocol
officers are more often than not the first representatives
of their nation with whom the leaders of our world interact.
They are relied upon for living accommodations, information,
scheduling, and attention to the issues such as who outranks
whom and how that effects each phase of a visit. It takes
a special kind of person to balance the many cultural and
personal needs of such important individuals.
In this world, I have set Army protocol officer Captain
Natalie Wentworth and her latest assignment, Russian Colonel
Viktor Baturnov. He isn't the high-ranking head-of-state
she's used to dealing with, but she's determined to do her
best to get him started in his training assignment with
American counterparts at the Pentagon. That means she must
show him around, help him get settled, and make certain
he's properly in-processed and introduced. Although she's
responsible for ensuring his comfort, she must remain detached
and professional, no matter how attractive he may be.
But there's just something about a man with an accent. Put
him in a foreign military uniform, add an air of mystery
and a sick child he's raising on his own and that man becomes
irresistible. Yet Natalie must resist if she's going to
get her career back on track after a series of unexpected
assignments below her capabilities. Things don't go as planned
when the life of Viktor's son hangs in the balance and Natalie
finds that she must choose between her career and her growing
attachment to both father and child.
This is a story of the fine point upon which life teeters
and how two strong people, loyal to separate nations, learn
to tip the scales in favor of love, despite the odds. It
was a pleasure to write their tale and I hope you will enjoy
reading it. And if you want Viktor's fabulous baked oatmeal
recipe, visit my web site at www.e-ashtree.com.
